Week Ending 3rd May 2009
Another Successful Punchestown
Off field highlight of the week was the sixth annual Kilmacud Crokes Hurling Corporate Race Day at the Punchestown National Hunt Festival on Tuesday 28th April 2009. Over 600 guests had a fantastic day out in the splendidly appointed Punchestown Pavilion giving Kilmacud Crokes Hurling’s bank account a much appreciated boost. Once again the Punchestown work group chaired by the Hurling Section’s Commercial Officer, Paul Gorman, excelled itself. Our thanks to all who contributed in any way to the success of the day.
Minor and Senior action
In Division 3 of the Minor hurling league the Crokes second team visited Monastery Road on Wednesday 29th April 2009 to take on Round Towers of Clondalkin. At half time the Stillorgan lads trailed by five points. A good second half performance and late come back left Crokes the minimum shy at the long whistle, 2.11 to 2-10. Starring were Jonathon Healy-Hayes, Brian McHenry, Brendan Halpin and Stephen Beale.
On Friday, May 1st, the seniors made their second winning visit in a week to Gorey, where they beat Shelmaliers in a cracker of a friendly by 4-10 to 3-11. For report check back later.

Dublin Minors beaten by Wexford
Parnell Park was the venue for Dublin’s Leinster minor hurling clash with Wexford. The Slaneysiders proved too strong, winning 1-19 to 1-9. Sean McGrath accounted for seven of the Dubs points. Naomhan O’Reardon wore the No 11 shirt. Also on the panel were Cillian Doherty, Eddie O’Byrne and Jack Doughan while Pat Halpin was a member of the management team. Dublin must now take the alternative route and play Laois away on 16th May. For report see HERE
Minor A’s beat Vincents
On Sunday morning, 3rd May 2009, the minor A’s overcame St Vincent’s to maintain their unbeaten run in the Division 1 league. On a bright sunny morning on the small back pitch in Pairc Naomh Uinseann Crokes started against a stiff breeze and defended well against the well drilled physical Marino side until conceding a goal and three points without reply in the last eight minutes to leave it 2-6 to 0-4 at the break, all the Crokes scores coming from frees courtesy of Sean McGrath.
Eight unanswered points had the teams level midway through the second instalment. Vincents nosed ahead only for a fine point from wing back Sean Murphy to equalise proceedings again. Indiscipline in the Crokes defence then allowed Vincents back into the lead with two pointed frees. At the end of regulation time the sides were level. When Vincent’s struck for a point in injury time they looked home and hosed only for the tables to be turned with a late Sean McGrath goal, final score 1-14 to 2-9. To the fore were Sean Murphy, Jack Doughan, Gary Melican, Barry Mulligan, Darren McVeigh and sharp shooter Sean McGrath.
Team: Eoin Dalton, Cian O’Brien, Cillian Doherty, Paul Collins, Sean Murphy, Jack Doughan, Gary Melican, Barry Mulligan, Alan Carr, Dillon Mulligan, Eddie O’Byrne, Darren McVeigh, Tom Clarke, Sean McGrath, Mark O’Dwyer. Subs: Louis Whelan for E O’Byrne (inj., 7 mins), Matthew Kinsella for T Clarke (37 mins) and Eoghan O’Dwyer.
Crokes on the Road
Three teams hit the road. The under 10’s made the short journey to Moibhi Road to play in the Na Fianna Dermot McNulty Tournament. The Cup team recorded victories over Na Piarsaigh (Cork) and Dicksboro (Kilkenny) while losing to eventual winners James Stephens (Kilkenny) and to Naomh Eanna (Wexford) by a last minute goal. The Shield team also acquitted themselves well with a win over Naomh Eanna, a draw with James Stephens and narrow losses to both Na Fianna teams and Na Piarsaigh.
The under 11’s were in Cork for the Na Piarsaigh Tournament. The main competition was won by a highly rated Sarsfields team. The Crokes boys lost the B final to Dublin neighbours Clontarf
For a combined under 16/15 squad it was off to Clarinbridge in Galway. A good, well contested match saw the home team win 1-13 to 0-10. Crokes opened the brighter and registered the first two points. Clarinbridge came back into the game and a twentieth minute goal put them 1-3 to 0-3 ahead. The Stillorgan lads had the upper hand for the remainder of the half and went in 1-4 to 0-6 down.
Turning to face a strong wind, the second half task looked daunting but the Crokes boys found admirable reserves of competitiveness and tenacity. They applied huge pressure to their opponents and contested every ball. A better return from frees would have narrowed the final margin of 1-13 to 0-10. The very worthwhile exercise and will help the ongoing development of these young hurlers. On a day when every Crokes player had his moment to the fore were Conor J O’Dwyer, Oisin O’Rorke, Cian Delaney and James Murphy, especially at full forward in the second half.
Squad: Paddy Tighe, Conor J O’Dwyer, Sean Boyd, Daibhid Corish, Louis O’Sullivan, Kevin James McGowan, Shane Moran, Oisin O’Rorke (04-, f-4), Conor O’Dwyer, Cian Delaney (0-1), Matthew Geraghty (0-1, f), Conor Devins (0-1), Andrew Cullinane (0-1), Barry Horan (0-1,f), Caolan Conway (0-1), James Murphy, Tomas Barry, Philip O’Shea and Mark Collins.
Our thanks to our host clubs for their generous hospitality.
The adult fixture list for the coming week contains three championship ties and all support is greatly appreciated.

Parental Assistance
We appeal to all parents of the new group to offer assistance in any way possible. No previous coaching experience is required and even periodic help is better than none at all. The success of the club relies on volunteers and it is a great way of getting to know other parents. If you are willing to offer any assistance in any capacity, whether it be coaching, roll, setting up pitches, tidying up pitches, etc. etc. please contact any of the following:

Quote from Parent
“As a parent who has 5 children in the club and 2 more about to start, I have got to know more people since I started helping out with my 5th child that I did bringing all my other children to training and matches. Your child will love to see you getting involved. And remember, these parents are the people you will be standing with on the sideline of pitches for the rest of your son's playing career! Many helpers lighten the load for everybody.”
