It was a weekend of mixed fortunes. Among the many positives were county final qualification for the Junior B’s, the intermediates progressing to the county semi-final, the hosting of a very successful under 9 tournament and an impressive skills competition win for our youngsters in Kilkenny. Counterbalancing was the exit of the seniors from their championship.
On Saturday 10th October 2009 the seniors bowed out at the quarter final stage when going down 1-20 to 1-10 to Lucan Sarsfields. Crokes trailed by two points at the interval, 1-6 to 0-7 and there was just a goal in it with nineteen minutes to play. However Lucan kicked on and, even though the Kilmacud side brought it back to 1-15 to 1-10 in the fifty fifth minute, the hungrier, sharper and better team won. For report and photos click HERE
It was then quickly back to Silverpark for a 5pm start to the intermediate quarter final with St Peregrines. Crokes led 1-8 to 0-7 at the break. Peregrines had it back to two points in the forty ninth minute. Next came the critical juncture. A Peregrines forward, clear on goal, was thwarted by a fine Richie Tighe save. The ball went down field and was slotted over by Daibhi de Paor. From there Crokes drove on to a 3-13 to 1-8 victory. For report click

Sunday morning we were back in O’Toole Park as the Junior B’s progressed to the county final with a well deserved 2-9 to 2-5 victory over Crumlin. Within twelve minutes Crokes were 1-4 to no score clear. They then allowed Crumlin to register an unanswered 1-2 but pulled away again to lead 2-6 to 1-2 at half time. Until the fifty first minute Crokes enjoyed a six point margin. A Crumlin goal reduced this to three and a nervous ten minutes ensued with just one more score coming, a Karl Russell point for Crokes. Had Crokes got a better return for their efforts on goal – they had seventeen wides in all, twelve of them in the second half to Crumlin’s total of four – the margin would have been considerably more decisive. From O’Toole Park it was on to Glenalbyn for the under 10 tournament – part of the Juvenile Hurling Committee’s Autumn Festival of Hurling (see below for more). Some 240 boys from twelve teams and eight clubs, spread across Dublin, Kilkenny, Tipperary, Kildare, Wexford and Antrim took part in splendid sunshine for the time of year. At the end of a very well organised and run event Naas defeated the hosts in a gripping Cup final while the result was reversed in the Plate Final with the silverware staying in Glenalbyn. Our thanks in particular to the visiting teams and mentors, the Crokes parents who produced a splendid catering feat, the referees, many from our senior team, the Juvenile Hurling committee for sponsoring the idea, both sets of Crokes players and their mentors. For report check back later.
Saturday opened well with a morning win for the under 14’s in their penultimate Division 1 league game at Silverpark over St Vincents. In spite of strong territorial dominance, Crokes led by just 0-7 to 0-5 after twenty seven minutes. This was in large part thanks to three points from midfielder David Kane, the vigilance of goalkeeper, Conor Hayes, on the occasions he was called into play and solid defensive play from Karl Doyle and Odhran O’Siochru. A Kevin O’Flanagain goal just before the short whistle (1-7 to 0-5) more accurately reflected the possession. Three points saw the Kilmacud boys edge further ahead but it wasn’t until Dara O’Gallchobhair’s fortieth minute goal that there was daylight between the teams. Eventually Crokes won 3-13 to 0-7. While this was going on a Kilmacud Crokes team made up of five boys, one from each year from under 12 to under 8, was traveling to the James Stephens club in Kilkenny for a DID sponsored skills competition. Nine other Kilkenny clubs took part as did Na Fianna from Dublin. Each boy in each age group was tested on five skills. When the results were counted the Crokes boys emerged victorious on 630 points. Second were the hosts on 590 and in third place were John Lockes of Callan. The winning team included
Under 12 Conor O’Dwyer
Under 12 Jim Gibbons
Under 12 Tom Kehoe
Under 12 Sean Kinsella
Under 12 Aaron O’Toole
On Saturday afternoon the Under 13’s had contrasting results. The A squad were within four points of Na Fianna at the break in their Division 1 clash at Albert College. However, in spite of the best efforts of Sean Keating, Sean Crowe, Peter Herlihy and Lorcan Tucker, they found the opposition too hot to handle in the second half and lost 7-7 to 1-3. The B’s fared better in their Division 3 tie with St Judes at Tymon Park winning 3-6 to 1-7, having been two points to the good at half time. Stars included Niall Sweeny, with three goals, Cian O’Connor, Ruairi Geraghty, Sayeed Rizvi, Frances O’Reilly, Hubert Barry, Daniel Coakley and Shane Vallom.

This is a great opportunity for our own young hurlers to showcase their talents in Pairc de Burca and we would ask all club members to come to support them. Matches will begin at 11.00 each day with the finals scheduled for 3.00pm.
We will be providing refreshments for the visiting teams and their families in Room 5 and all donations will be gratefully received.
Monster Draw
Like every other group in the club, the club executive is strapped for funds and has initiated a fundraising effort to get the money needed to pay for ongoing pitch maintenance. The hurling club has been allocated a quota of tickets to sell as part of this initiative. Essentially it is a monster draw scheduled for 27th November 2009 and 26th February 2010 with a prize fund of €100,000 on each occasion. Tickets for both draws together cost €100 or €50 per draw. In all there are 940 prizes. Tickets are available for €100 each & if you wish to purchase a ticket, please contact any hurling mentor or member of the hurling committee.

Parental Assistance
We appeal to all parents of the new group to offer assistance in any way possible. No previous coaching experience is required and even periodic help is better than none at all. The success of the club relies on volunteers and it is a great way of getting to know other parents. If you are willing to offer any assistance in any capacity, whether it be coaching, roll, setting up pitches, tidying up pitches, etc. etc. please contact any of the following:
