Report for Week Ending 21st March 2010
This was one of the busiest Kilmacud Crokes hurling weeks for many a day with a total of eighteen games played.
Highlight was an impressive account opener for the seniors at Silverpark in AHL1 and not far behind was the two points earned by the intermediates at Rathcoole against Commercials in AHL3.
The result of the senior game was clear from an early stage as Crokes ran out 6-7 to 2-6 winners. O’Tooles task was not made easier when they had a man red carded after fifteen minutes but this was not significant to the outcome of a game in which, at times, it looked as if the winners could score at will. The intermediate match was a much closer affair that the promoted Kilmacud side won by 1-11 to 1-9, having been level 1-5 apiece at the break. The Crokes defence was very good throughout, especially the full back line of Shane McNicholas, Fergus Monnelly and Paul Collins. Further out, Darren McVeigh at half back and Sean Murphy at half forward were impressive with Ray Mangan turning in a man of the match performance. There was disappointment for the Junior A’s as they went down by 2-11 to 1-9 against Crumlin at Pearse Park.
The Junior E’s had a bloodless victory when St Josephs O’Connell Boys cried off the scheduled AHL8 game at Silverpark
The only underage team in competitive Sunday action was the under 15 squad who had a 10am league Division 1 start at Silverpark 2. Crokes were 2-5 to 0-5 ahead at the interval. Thanks in particular to the efforts of Michael O’Dwyer, who scored a superb solo point while operating at corner back, Odhran O’Siochru, Donnacha O’Murchu, Ronan Horgan, Ciaran McIntyre, who chipped in with a goal and Mark O’Loughlin, who recorded 1-7, the home side held the initiative, 3-9 to 1-9, at the final whistle.

Once the under 15 game finished the under 16’s took the field against Dicksboro from Kilkenny, en route to Parnell Park. This was a good competitive game which had Crokes 3-4 to 1-4 to the good at half time. Dicksboro narrowed the margin a little in the second half and the game finished 4-8 to 1-13.
Squad: M Herlihy, P O’Shea, D Corish, M Collins, C O’Dwyer, M Geraghty, J Murphy, C Devins, O O’Rorke (0-2, f-1, 65-1)), C Gormley (1-1), KJ McGowan (1-1), C Conway (0-3, f-1), N Gorey (2-0), B Horan, CJ O’Dwyer (0-1), L O’Sullivan, R McGowan, M McNicholas, T Barry and P Finlay.

There were three games in Glenalbyn.
The under 13’s hosted another Kilkenny team on the way to the Allianz National Hurling League Division 1 game in Parnell Park, Clara’s under 14’s. In a game where the visitors physical strength told, the spoils went to the Kilkenny boys by 1-13 to 1-3. Among Crokes better players were Killian Fleming, Darragh Butler, Eoin Sheehy, Conall Keane and Stephen O’Dwyer.
Squad: K Fleming, S McEntee, D Butler, E Sheehy, M O’Rourke, C Keane, M Connor, S O’Dwyer, A Tuck, C O’Dwyer, F O’Connor, A Healy, J Maher, C Kealy, M Hogan, C McNicholas, O Doherty, T Fox, K Lanigan and F Whitely
James Stephens were guests of the under 12’s and under 11’s respectively. The latter won well while the former went down by three points.
In the intercounty game at Parnell Park, Kilkenny overcame a Dublin side, that had Crokes Niall Corcoran at right corner back, in a high scoring encounter that finished 2-21 to 0-23. For report see www.hill16.ie
The week’s games started on St Patricks Day with teams visiting from Kilkenny and Clare and the 2009 under 12 Division 1 league decider to be played.
In Silverpark at the end of a particularly competitive first half, Crokes led St Martins by 0-6 to 0-5 in a challenge. Several substitutions were made during the course of the game which ended in a 1-15 to 1-7 victory for the Muckalee side.
In Pairc de Burca the under 14A's entertained Kilmaley, on the Clare boys way to Croke Park to support neighbours Kilmurray Ibrickane in the All-Ireland Club Football final. The Crokes lads proved too strong, winning 7-5 to 1-9, having been 3-5 to 1-5 to the good at the break.
Across on the all-weather surface in the Paddock the under 14B's had a rip roaring 13 a side match with the visitors B team. Until the finish it was end to end stuff, with the lead fluctuating. Eventually Crokes ran out 12-5 to 10-4 winners.
There was some unfinished 2009 business for one of the Division 1 under 12 teams as they travelled to Albert College Park to play Na Fianna in the delayed League Final. This was a cracking game. Crokes scored two early goals to forge ahead. By half time Na Fianna had recovered to lead 2-5 to 2-3. The second half was also well contested with the Na Fianna keeper in sparkling form. In the end the home team won by 5-5 to 2-7.
Also held was a very well supported charity cycle in aid of the Benevolent Fund. A particular word of thanks to all who put their shoulders to the wheel to look after our visitors and also to the charity cyclists and the organising committee. For more see HERE or on the photo below
On a pleasant Saturday afternoon, 20th March 2010, there were league games at A level for the under 16’s, A and B for the under 14’s and two A games and a C match for the under 13’s.
At Hartstown Park, the under 16’s had a facile win over St Pergrines in Division 1. This was a game where the result was never really in doubt. At half time Crokes led 3-4 to 0-3. The opposition managed just one point in the second half as the Kilmacud boys added 3-5. Final score Kilmacud Crokes 6-9 -v- St Peregrines 0-4. For report see HERE
The under 14A squad defeated Clontarf by 4-4 to 1-3 in a Silverpark Division 1 tie. Having played against the wind Crokes were level at the break, 2-0 to Clontarf’s 1-3. The northsiders did not score again in a game where the winners had starring performances from Cillian O’Shea, Mark McCallion, Eamonn Allen and Michael Crowley with Barney Sultan and Daniel Coakley coming to prominence in the second half.
Team: T Duke, M McCallion, E Keane, C O’Shea, F O’Reilly, E Allen (1-0, 65), P Herlihy, C Gowing, S Crowe, M Crowley (0-2), D Dagg, D Coakley, L Tucker (1-0), S Veale (1-0), R Kennedy (1-1). Sub B Sultan (0-1) for L Tucker.
The under 14B’s were less fortunate in their Division 3 clash at Marley Park notwithstanding good performances from Andrew McGowan, Cian Fahey, Adam O’Neill Sayeed Rizvi, Rory Geraghty and John Egan. Squad: R Geraghty, A Liffey, S Rizvi, J Egan, K Culligan, E McMahon, C Fahey, A McGowan, N Sweeny, A O’Neill, P Comerford, H Barry, D Bohan, S Vallon, C Smyth and R Finnegan
The two Division 1 under 13 teams had mixed fortunes. The travelling team overcame Fingallians by 5-23 to 1-4 with Eoin Sheehy, Chris Kealy and Mattie Hogan most prominent. The home side played Ballyboden St Endas in Deerpark and went down by 2-7 to 1-4 with Darragh Butler, Conor O’Dwyer and Cian Ryan to the fore.
In Division 5 Crokes lost to Lucan Sarsfields at Arthur Griffith Park on a 6-7 to 3-3 scoreline. Stars included Conal Keane, Daniel Keegan and Conor Walsh. For under 13 report see HERE
