Two more trophies for the cabinet, both minor teams into semi finals and a valiant effort by the intermediates sums up this week’s Kilmacud Crokes hurling story
An opening four minutes in which they conceded a goal and two points was a setback a brave Kilmacud Crokes intermediate hurling side found just too much to overcome in the 20010 championship semi final. The game was played in a strong cross wind at the somewhat short Kiltipper Road pitch on Saturday 9th October 2010.
When the Kevins keeper put over his second long range free in the seventeenth minute it was 1-4 to 0-1. Six minutes later a Daibhi de Paor free had Crokes just two points in arrears, 1-4 to 0-5, the intervening scores coming from Sean Murphy, a neat catch and return, Daibhi de Paor (free) and Declan Browne. Kevins then powered ahead, scoring five points to one for Crokes before the short whistle sounded.
On the resumption the sides exchanged minors. Crokes added two points, one a beauty from near the side line by Barry Mulligan, before persistence from Sean Murphy set up Daibhi de Paor for a coolly taken goal from ten metres – 1-9 to 1-10. Twice in the next six minutes the Dolphins Barn men extended the lead to two only for Crokes to bring it back to one. In the remaining time Kevins got more from their attacks, raising three white flags, while Crokes were unable to breach the opposition’s rearguard although they did manage to manufacture two late goal chances, which were blocked and went narrowly wide respectively, as the game terminated 1-14 to 1-11. Earlier in the afternoon the under 16’s gained a small measure of compensation for their championship exit when claiming the Shield with a 2-13 to 2-5 win over St Judes at Silverpark. A first minute goal from Ross McGowan was followed by three overs before the visitors opened their account with a point after twenty minutes. At the break it was 1-4 to 0-3 with the Tymon lads ruing missed chances from placed balls. After nearly twenty minutes of the second half the Stillorgan boys seemed well set as they led by ten points. A series of quick scores for Judes suddenly had it back to four. The Crokes team essayed up the field and got the scores to put the issue beyond doubt. For the winners most impressive were Cian MacGabhann in goal, Andrew Colclough, Philip O’Shea, Matthew Geraghty, Kevin James McGowan, Neil Gorey, Barry Horan and substitute Odhran O’Siochru.

Five other underage teams took the field in league games the same afternoon. Pick of the bunch were the under 13C’s whose 8-8 to 7-9 win over Fingallians B in Deerpark sees them sit top of Division 5 by two points with a game to play. Among those most to thank for the result were three goal hero Sean Gorman, Joe Dalton and Louis de Courcey. In division 1 KC1 went down by the minimum away to Naomh Barrog 0-9 to 1-5 with Killian Fleming, who kept a clean sheet in goal, Darragh Butler, Johnny Maher and Oisin Doherty, who fought hardest of the forwards, most prominent. In the same division KC2 went down by 3-14 to 0-7 against Na Fianna at Deerpark. Stephen O’Dwyer , Eoin Sheehy and Cian Ryan carried the battle best.
The two under 14 teams suffered losses. In division 1 the A’s gave way to Na Fianna by 2-10 to 0-4 at Pairc de Burca with defenders Killian O’Shea, Mark McCallion, Sean Crowe and Peter Herlihy to the fore. The B’s trip to Bridgefield saw them return empty handed against St Sylvesters. Crokes trailed by five points at the interval. They drew level in the second half but conceded late goals to yield the Division 3 points. Stephen O’Hurley, Matthew Redmond, Andrew Porter and Paul Comerford played best.
On Sunday 10th October 2010 both minor teams are in championship action. The A’s secured top spot in their group and a home championship semi final berth with a 2-14 to 2-6 win over Na Fianna at Silverpark. Crokes scored the first three points before the Moibhi Road side goaled. Crokes recovered and at half time led 1-7 to 1-1. In the second installment the home team were always in command. The B’s headed for Broomfield for a do or die encounter with St Sylvesters. The Malahide team piled on the early pressure and racked up five wides before the opening score from Crokes Fionan Motherway. Sylvesters ended the first half 1-4 to 0-4 to the good. A reinvigorated Kilmacud outfit emerged for the second half and Crokes won out 3-12 to 2-11. With group leaders Raheny losing this win gives Crokes top spot and the entitlement to a home semi. While the minor A’s were winning their game at Silverpark the Under 15’s qualified for the “A” Shield final by defeating St Judes 2-15 to 2-8. The winners, who led from start to finish, were 2-6 to 1-5 in front at the short whistle. Sean Bedford was outstanding, ably assisted by Ronan Horgan, Cian MacGabhann and Dara O’Gallchobhair. Down in Glenalbyn the second of the October series of juvenile hurling tournaments took place when the under 10’s entertained visitors from Kilkenny (O’Loughin Gaels, and James Stephens), Cork (Fermoy), Antrim (St Johns) and Dublin (Ballyboden and Naomh Mearnog). After an exciting and high standard day’s hurling one of the Crokes teams won the Martin Lacey sponsored Millennium Cup overcoming O’Loughlin Gaels in a closely contested final. The Shield went Noreside as James Stephens defeated the other Kilmacud team with a last minute point. Well done to all concerned and many thanks to the organisers.

AUTUMN JUVENILE HURLING FESTIVAL CONTINUES
The Autumn Hurling Festival began on Sunday 3rd October 2010 in Glenalbyn and continues for the next two weeks. With hundreds of young hurlers arriving from all over the country the festival has already delivered some thrilling matches. Your support and assistance is vital to make this a continued feature in the hurling calendar for the boys.

“B” Tournament - Na Fianna (Dublin), Bray Emmets (Wicklow), Ballyboden (Dublin) and Faughs (Dublin). Two Kilmacud Crokes teams will also take part

Nursery Hurling is back! Training recommenced in St. Killians school temporarily for Sept and reverted to Kilmacud Crokes GAA Club, Glenalbyn on Saturday 2nd October. Please note the following times and contact the managers for any further details. Note: (Equipment will be provided for beginners only, NO registration fee required until 2011)

A meeting for parents of new boys who have recently started at the Kilmacud Crokes Hurling Nursery was held in Glenalbyn on Tuesday September 28th. At the meeting Hurling Coach Niall Corcoran outlined the coaching aims that we are trying to achieve within the nursery as well as outlining how the hurling nursery is structured. We got a good response from parents that were willing to help out in the nursery, which is crucial to the success of the nursery.
We would encourage anybody who is interested in giving a hand out at the nursery to make him or herself known to Niall or the head coach organising a particular skills station on the morning.
When parents and children arrive in the morning, Marion will be taking the registration for both the 2005 & 2004 groups. If anybody is in a position to help with registration please make yourself known to Marion at the start of the session.
A Foundation Coaching Course will commence on Oct 12th. Anybody interested in attending the course please contact Niall Corcoran directly at 087 9834287
