Report for Week Ended 22 May 2011
It was underage action all the way
On Sunday 22nd May 2011 the minor B’s travelled to Clontarf Road where they lost to Alfie Byrne Gaels (a Clontarf/Scoil Ui Chonaill combination) in MHL3. In blustery conditions but a fine pitch Crokes did not do enough to retain their 100% record in the league. The opposition were that bit more hungry in the critical early stages of the second half when Crokes sought to overturn a h-t deficit of 3 points (1-5 to 0-5). Despite their marginal wind advantage they conceded more scores than they scored at this time - the Gaels second goal opening an eight point gap. A long range goal from Daibhid Corish and some points at the end made it respectable at full time, 2-10 to 1-8. On a day when things did not happen best for Crokes were KJ McGowan, Conor O’Dwyer, Donal Keane Michael Herlihy Andrew Colclough and Oisin O’Carroll. For photos see HERE
Team - M Herlihy, O O’Carroll, A Colclough, C O’Dwyer, M Collins, D Corish (1-2), M O’Dwyer J O’Brien (0-2), N Hanley (0-2), J Murphy, KJ McGowan, L O’Sullivan (0-1), C McIntyre, D Keane (0-1), D O’Gallchobhair.
A double header in Glenalbyn brought redemption for the under 15A’s and a continuation of their unbeaten Division 3 run for the under 15B’s.
The A’s were coming to terms with their lacklustre Friday night display, when they went under by 1-10 to 2-4 to Ballyboden in the First Division at Cherryfield. Having had the favour of a strong wind Crokes, for which Daniel Coakley, Des Dagg and Michael Crowley played best, trailed 1-4 to 0-4 at half time. All the Boden second phase scores came from frees. It was a different story on Sunday morning as the Kilmacud boys hit the tea break 0-5 to 0-4 in arrears against Faughs but against a very strong gusting wind. Two early second half goals from Conor Gowing ended the game as a contest as Crokes ran out 4-12 to 1-8 winners with Peter Herlihy, Ryan Murphy, Michael Crowley, Tom Duke and Cian O’Connor to the fore. For photographs see HERE
Team - T Murphy, L Tucker, R Murphy, K O’Shea, P Herlihy, E Allen, D Dagg, D Coakley, F O’Reilly, S Crowe, E McMahon, C O’Connor, M Crowley, T Duke, S Keating. Subs: A Ahern for L Tucker (1 min, inj), M Crowley for S Keating (5 min inj) and H Campion for A Ahern (47 mins)
The wind was even more a significant factor in the following Division 3 match against St Sylvesters. The home team made the most of the first period advantage and led 4-5 to 0-3 thanks to a hat trick from Paul Comerford and another goal courtesy of Colin Smyth. Even with the fourteen point lead it was clear all hands would be needed on the resumption against a skillful Malahide team. So it proved.
The pressure was constant and a heroic defence, strategically set up with Paul Comerford withdrawn to sweep behind the centre back, played a crucial part as did the fine goalkeeping of Cillian Fleming. No less important was the constant harrying and hard work of the players up the field, in particular Niall Sweeney who again unselfishly ran himself into the ground. When scores were vital Ronan Kennedy struck for a good goal and Barney Sultan bagged a great point from forty metres. For pictures see HERE
Team - C Fleming, R Geraghty, M Redmond, A Porter, B Sultan (0-2), A Ahern, S O’Hurley, S Rizvi, R Couse (0-1), A O’Neill, N Sweeny, K Culligan, C Smyth (1-0), P Comerford (3-3, f-2), R Kennedy (1-0). Subs: H Barry for C Smyth (half time), J Egan for K Culligan (half time), D Gaughran for R Kennedy (50 mins).
This was the under 15B’s second good league win of the week. Pitch No 14 St Anne’s Park was the venue for the game with Naomh Barrog on Tuesday 17th May 2011. The visitors opened the scoring with a point. Soon after Barrog goaled. Crokes pulled two points back before the home team edged ahead again only for Crokes to reel them in. Barrog made it 1-2 to 0-4 and there it remained until the break.
Playing with the slight incline and whatever cross breeze was blowing, on this sizeable pitch, the Stillorgan lads had every reason to be confident as the second tranche threw in. However the Kilbarrack side were first to score. Undaunted, the Kilmacud team dug in and the turning point came with a well taken Paul Comerford goal midway through the half. For report see HERE
While the under 15’s hogged Pairc de Burca the under 14A’s had Fr. O’Neills from Ladysbridge/Ballymacoda, Co Cork, as guests in Silverpark. The match ended 4-6 to 2-10 in the hosts’ favour (half time 3-1 to 2-3). Leading lights included Cathal Keane, Conor Kelly, Conn O’Cleirigh and Conor O’Dwyer.
Saturday 21st May 2011
The under 14B’s had a hard fought one point victory in Division 2 over Whitehall Colmcillles at Ellenfield Park, 1-7 to 2-3. At the interval it was 0-4 to 0-3. Ciaran Hennessey, Callum Pearson, Brian Grogan, Louis de Courcy, Martin Connor and Donal Callaghan were prominent. Three league wins in a row has put the B’s back in league contention.

The under 14A’s received a Division 1 walkover from Naomh Barrog
The under 13A’s played very well to defeat Whitehall Colmcilles by 2-7 to 1-5 in Silverpark 2 in the first division. The first half display established the platform. Starring were Ronan Hayes at centre back, Michael Mullin at corner forward Paddy Flaherty and wing back Jack Gallagher. For photos see HERE. The Dublin 9 club gained revenge in the under 13B (Division 4) tie in Deerpark.
A novel outing for the under 16’s came when they hosted the Cork senior Camogie team for a challenge in Silverpark. For pictures see HERE.
Upcoming Fixtures
With most club teams in action at least once during the coming week, Dublin return to the intercounty fray as they face Offaly in the Leinster Senior Hurling Quarter Final at Croke Park on Sunday 29th May. Best of luck to all the Crokes personnel involved.
