Report for May Bank Holiday weekend 2007

Wednesday evening and juvenile hurling took centre stage.

Under 11’s and Under 12’s

The under 11’s were in action against Ballinteer St Johns and Faughs.  Against the former at Marley a 3-12 to 1-5 win was recorded with Ronan Kennedy (in goals and outfield), Pete Maloney, Desmond Dagg, Daniel Coakley, Adam O’Neill, Barney Sultan, John Egan, Francis O’Reilly (who got one exceptional point), Eamonn Allen, Hubert Barry and Daniel Coakley to the fore.  Against Faughs two games were played in Tymon Park with Crokes winning one 7-6 to 4-8 and going down 1-13 to 2-9 in the other.  For report see HERE.

The under 12’s had a 7-09 to 1-05 win over Ballyboden St Enda’s at the Hermitage.  For report see HERE  

Minor A’s and Under 16B’s

The minor A’s defeated Na Fianna at Silverpark in a league game by 0-14 to 1-7 with good performances from Conor Clinton, Paddy Igoe, Shane McNicholas, Barra O’Leidhin, Niall Butler and Ciaran O’Grady.

At the same venue the under 16B’s lost 3-5 to 2-5 to St Judes in their league game.

Seniors v Faughs

On Thursday the seniors were in Boland Cup action against Faughs in Silverpark.  After a game that never really sparkled Crokes emerged with their 100% Boland Cup record intact by 2-8 to 1-10.  An early James Burke goal should have set the home team up but they could not capitalise and went in 1-5 to 0-5 ahead at half time.  The second half failed to produce an increase in tempo on a night where the Crokes stars included MacDara O’hOgain, Kieran Murphy, Declan Browne and Hugh Gannon.

Under 8's, 9's, 10’s & 13's 

 Saturday was another busy day.  The under 10’s played Ballyboden in three games in Oatlands, winning two well and losing one by a point.  The split under 13 teams had Division 1 league wins against St Sylvesters in Deerpark (3-7 to  1-3) and against St Vincents away (5-09 to 0-1).  Games were also scheduled for the under 8’s and under 9’s.

 

Under 14’s v St Brigid’s

At Russell Park the under 14’s defeated hosts St Brigids by 1-10 to 0-7.  Crokes led 0-7 to 0-3 at half time having played with a stiff breeze.  In the twentieth minute Brigids were reduced to ten men when one of their players received a straight red card.  Three Brigids points in the first five minutes of the second half brought the margin to the minimum.  A thirty eight minute point from Jamie Clinton steadied the nerves and a goal a short time later from the same player was a very welcome boost.  Even at that Crokes found it difficult to make the game secure and were relieved to hear the final whistle.  To the fore for Crokes were Paddy Tighe, Sean Boyd, Oisin O’Carroll, Shane Moran, Oisin O’Rorke and substitutes Conor Devins and Conor Sweeny.

Under 16’s v St. David’s and U15’s v Dicksboro

The under 16’s had a comfortable league victory over St Davids (a Parnells/Craobh Chiaran combination) at Silverpark while the under 15’s travelled to Kilkenny for a challenge against Dicksboro.

Minor B’s v Plunketts

On Sunday the minor B’s rounded off the week in style.  Having somewhat unfortunately lost their opening round robin championship game to Whitehall Colmcilles the Crokes under 18’s faced a difficult must win away assignment against Oliver Plunketts Eoghan Ruadh.  Played in the tight confines of Martin Savage Park the Kilmacud youngsters showed great resolve to emerge with a one point victory, 3-9 to 2-11. 

Playing with the aid of a strong breeze in the first half the Stillorgan lads were 2-8 to 0-5 ahead at the interval.  A thirty second minute goal from a 20 metre free brought Plunketts right back into the game.  Although Crokes responded with a goal within three minutes when Killian Motherway finished Sean McGrath’s 65 to the net it was no occasion for sitting on laurels.  From then one the Plunketts onslaught was unrelenting with the home side notching up 1-5 to Crokes single point.  In hindsight it was this excellently converted 45 metre free from Sean McGrath in the fiftieth minute that proved decisive.  On a day when gritty battling was required Crokes stars included Niall Mulligan, Jack Doughan, Paul Collins, Chris Cunningham, McGrath and Motherway..  Buoyed by this hard earned and deserved victory the team now face Erins Isle in their final championship group game.

Hurling Arena

Progress continues apace on our new Hurling Arena in Glenalbyn see HERE.   When complete this €500,000 project will be a huge addition to hurling in the club. 

Hurling Nursery

Saturdays see the continuation of outdoor nursery activity at Glenalbyn. This continues every Saturday at 10.00 am for children born 1999 or later.  Contact Liam Coughlan 086-6063232 and lccoughlan@eircom.net.  Active parental input is essential for the success of the nursery.  No hurling experience necessary!
