U10's (2003) vs Cappataggle - 7 July 2013 in Oatlands
Excellent display of hurling skills on historic day for Dublin Hurling
On a beautiful Sunday morning in early July, the club hosted a large group of girls & boys from Cappataggle, Galway ahead of what turned out to be a historic Leinster Hurling Final for Dublin. From the U10's we had two teams take to the field, both of whom did the club proud as the following reports show.
U10 Team 1
Team: Joe Quinlan, Luke Ward, Conor Hughes, Hugh Moran, Jordan Mynes, Colm Crean, Kieran Maguire, Darragh Geraghty, Darrren Crowley
Match report
There was some really fine displays of hurling skills from our team today on what was a beautiful morning for hurling. We were particularly impressed with how we were passing really well to players in better positions. This was even commented on by Cappataggle at the reception afterwards. We also used the wings well to avoid launching all our play up the middle; both our goal keepers, Joe and Hugh, in turn had a big part to play as they gave intelligent ball from their puck outs. Our first touch was good with more use of jab lift to keep momentum up than we sometimes see. All our players without exception ran hard today especially when they didn’t have the ball and this helped force at least a dozen Cappataggle opportunities wide as they struck from far out mainly due to the pressure they were under. Some great catches in the air led to immediate points which also showed a bit of good sharp thinking. Play of the day came late in the match when Luke struck the ball up to Joe who ran onto it, lifted it cleanly and took his four steps, before looking up and spotting Darren who had consciously dropped back from his marker to the left of the goal. Beautiful pass from Joe caught by Darren who running across the goal, drove the ball hard back across the keeper into the left hand inside net. Beautiful combination play. All in all a good rounded display against what was very decent opposition.
Final Score: KC 6-4, Cappataggle 2-2
U10 Team 2
Team: Darragh Nelligan, Conor McCarthy, Gavin Kirwan, Sam McMahon, Mark McHugh, Patrick Flood, Matthew Jennings, Eric McMahon, Daniel Nolan, Ciarán Sweeney
Match report
This team put in a huge effort and played really well throughout. Cappataggle had some lovely hurlers and it was great to see our lads competing well with them. Our midfield ran their hearts out, managing to pick and strike plenty of good ball into the forwards. Our goalies were achieving good distance in puck-outs delivering the ball well over the midfield line. Our backs too had a good game with pretty much every ball that came at them on the ground stopped and cleared. Up front, we picked off some really nice skillful points making use of the great delivery from midfield. At the end, our lads were desperately unlucky not to win as Cappataggle went for two points in the closing minutes to see both of them just dip in under the cross-bar to be chalked up as two goals.
Final Score: KC 2-3, Cappataggle 3-2
After Match
After the matches were over, the U13 and U10 hurling teams and the U12 camogie girls team all made their way to the club house where an absolutely fantastic spread of food was put on by the combined efforts of volunteers from all three groups. Thanks to all involved on the catering side.
