Successful Feile Opener

Body

It rained, then it rained some more and then it didn’t stop.  Anyone expecting top of the ground hurling was sorely disappointed as Crokes opened their All-Ireland Feile campaign against Loughrea in St Brendan’s Park on Friday 24th June 2011.

Having won the toss the Stillorgan boys opted to take the wind advantage.  They dominated the first half and might have gone in more than 0-5 to 0-0 ahead if one or two goal chances had been converted.  A disallowed goal for a square ball did not help.

A point from a Darragh Butler 50 metre free four minutes into the second half added a comfort level but from there on matters became fraught.  While Crokes might have goaled on one or two occasions, as the half wore on the defensive lines withdrew closer and closer to their own goal.  The hosts were awarded two frees in the last few moments both of which were unproductive and the Dublin champions marched on.  To the fore were Brian Grogan, Mark O’Rourke, Darragh Butler and Conor O’Dwyer
