KILMACUD CROKES U16B'S 2-18 St.PEREGRINES 1-12.
(Match report by Diarmuid Coogan.)
On Saturday 2nd October, Kilmacud Crokes U16b Hurlers exacted a degree of revenge over Peregrines after their recent League Final defeat with an 8 point win to clinch a quarter final spot in the U16 C Championship.
What was most impressive about Crokes' performance was that they clocked up 2-18 through 7 different players despite being without sharp shooting forward Ciaran O'Donnell.
Although playing with the aid of a stiff breeze in the 1st half, Crokes took a few minutes to settle and Peregrines hit the 1st 2 points before half forward Matthew Peters opened Crokes account on 7 minutes. (0-1 to 0-2)
Midfielder Dan Buggy won the resultant puck out and fed half back Niall McArdle who hit a "monster point" from his own 65! (0-2 to 0-2)
Centre Forward Dan Sheerin followed up with a fine effort from the Peregrines 65.
At this stage the Crokes half back line of Dan Twomey, Cillian Molloy and McArdle along with Buggy and Tadhg Rafferty in midfield were beginning to dominate and Molloy fed an intelligent pass to Rafferty in space and he hit a great point from 65 metres. (0-4 to 0-2)
Just before the break, half forward Robert Phelan(just returned from a long injury) make a great break on the left and passed inside to Peters who found full forward Seán Coogan on edge of the "large square"; Coogan hit a piledriver which went a metre over the bar! (0-5 to 0-2)
2nd Quarter.
Crokes continued where they'd left off and Peters, corner forward Zeki Acka and McArdle followed up with 3 points in the 1st 3 minutes. (0-8 to 0-2)
On 19 minutes, Sheerin ran hard at the defence from 40 metres out, and with the mentors screaming at him to hit the sliothar over the bar, he ignored all and continued his run into the 14 metre area where he seemed to be dispossessed but he followed up to demonstrate previously undiscovered football skills and “toe poked” the ball beyond the advancing Peregrines keeper! (1-8 to 0-2)
Peregrines hit back with a free before McArdle hit a 65 to make it 1-9 to 0-3 after 20 minutes.
Crokes then had some anxious moments in defence which goalkeeper Cormac Hall and his full back line of Fintan "Gentile" Fitzgerald, Adam Golden and Finn Robertson dealt with well although on 2 occasions Peregrines hit the side netting. Peregrines did manage 2 frees to reduce the gap (1-9 to 0-5) but Rafferty and Zeki Acka re-established control with a point each in the 2 minutes before 1/2 time.
Half time 1-11 to 0-5.
Peregrines used the wind to their advantage in the 2nd half and profited from Crokes' indiscipline to hit 3 frees before Crokes finally woke up from the break and corner forward Emre Acka and Rafferty hit points on 40 and 41 minutes. (1-13 to 0-8) Peregrines, with Dublin U16 Goalkeeper Danny Joyce in lethal form, scored 2 more frees before the break. (1-13 to 0-10)
Peregrines reduced the gap further just after the break before Rafferty sent in a long ball which was brilliantly caught by Zeki Acka who turned and struck over the bar.(1-14 to 0-11)
The visitors tried frantically to get back into the game and were rewarded a few minutes later when Joyce sent a long free into the Crokes area. In the chaos that followed, a Pergrines forward drove a shot to Hall’s right and he batted it out but the referee signalled that the sliothar had gone over the line to make it a 3 point game.(1-14 to 1-11)
With 8 minutes remaining, Peters settled Crokes nerves as he cut in from the left and hit a great point. (1-15 to 1-11) Peregrines hit another free but Emre Acka followed up with another point a minute later (1-16 to 1-12).
ACKA BROTHERS COMBINE TO SEAL THE DEAL!
On 55 minutes , Emre struck for a point from the right about 20 metres out but the ball dropped short and Joyce uncharacteristically batted it into the lap of Zeki who gratefully finished it to the net! (2-16 to 1-12)
A minute later, following a long ball in from sub Bobby Mellon, Zeki tapped over another point. (2-17 to 1-12)
The following minutes played out with Rafferty and Joyce exchanging points from frees to give Crokes a slightly flattering 8 point win.
(2-18 to 1-13)
