CARDIAC ARREST – YOU COULD SAVE A LIFE
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS & COACHES

Cardio Vascular Disease is Ireland's biggest killer, with in the region of 10,000 deaths each year. Six thousand are from sudden cardiac arrest and 70 per cent of these occur outside of hospital. It is imperative that sports clubs and organisations are equipped and prepared to respond in the context of these statistics. The current survival rate of an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in Ireland is 1 per cent. There is significant evidence to suggest that early intervention can have a major impact on survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest. (from GAA website)  Link:

There are defibrillators located in Oatlands, Silverpark, Stepaside and Glenalbyn.

Note: These locations are correct as at 27.11.2013 – parents and coaches are asked to familiarise themselves with these locations. Every effort will be made to update any location changes but you should try to keep an eye out for the AEDs every time you visit one of these facilities.

We would urge all parents and coaches to avail of training in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and in the use of defribrillators.  However, even without such training anybody can come to the aid of a person suffering cardiac arrest and possibly save a life. Basic CPR should be administered until the defibrillator is ready (or emergency services arrive), and continued afterwards if necessary. A video on basic CPR is presented below.  Most defibrillators in public locations are easy to use and actually have audio to guide users in the correct procedure.

Defibrillator training is extremely important but CPR is the first thing after the 999 call.
Below is a Vinny Jones CPR YouTube clip:

The YouTube clip below (from www.gaa.ie) shows a step-by-step rescue scenario and shows how a defibrillator (the model shown is the samaritan PAD) can help save a life:

As per the guidelines issued by the European Resuscitation Council, the "Chain of Survival" is:

1. Early recognition and call for help
2. Early CPR
3. Early defibrillation
4. Post resuscitation care

The club plans to run a number of training courses in 2014. Details will be posted as soon as available.
