Dermot Early Youth Leadership Initiative - Calling All TY Students

Body

The Dermot Earley Youth Leadership Initiative (DEYLI )takes its name from one of Ireland’s most inspirational leaders and one of Gaelic games most iconic proponents, Dermot Earley (1948- 2010). The initiative, a tribute to Dermot’s lifetime of sporting and professional achievements and his commitment to community service, is brought to life through a partnership between GAA, Foróige, and NUI Galway. The programme empowers young people to enhance their leadership capabilities to better enable them to reach their full potential and have a positive impact on the world around them.

About the Initiative

DEYLI has seen over 600 young GAA members (aged 15-18) complete the programme, gaining from NUIG a FETAC level 6 third level qualification in Youth Leadership and Community Action for their efforts. This unique programme evokes and honours the values Dermot Earley epitomised and is designed to foster them in a new generation of young Irish leaders.

Kilmacud Crokes facilitators will run the programme with a group of 24 transition year students within our club. The programme comprises three modules, two of which are facilitated, and one is undertaken by the young people independently. Each of the facilitated modules consists of 15 one-hour sessions. The programme will run between January 2022 and May 2022 for transition year students in the club. During the programme, participants will gain aptitudes in essential leadership skills in a safe and supportive environment.

Module one focuses on the individual and their leadership skills, building their self-awareness, community skills, values and communication skills.
Module two focuses on their ability to lead as part of a team enabling them to cultivate their skills further. Module three focuses on their individual leadership aspirations and offers the participants the opportunity to lead their own project within their community from conception to completion.
