Report for week ending 1 March 2009
Sunday morning, 1st March 2009, produced a two out of three return at Silverpark with wins for the minor A’s and under 16’s, both over Na Fianna, and defeat against Lucan Sarsfields for the minor B’s.
A strong wind was a significant factor in all three games. The minor A’s, playing against the breeze, led 1-4 to 1-2 at half time in their league Division 1 game. By the forty fifth minute they were 1-6 to 1-2 clear. A goal from a 20 metre free and a point immediately after levelled the game and it took points from Sean McGrath (free) and Barry Mulligan (from a Naomhan O’Riordain pass) to seal the points, 1-8 to 2-3. To the fore for Crokes were Cian O’Brien, Paul Collins, Jack Doughan, Sean Murphy, Alan Carr, Barry Mulligan and Naomhan O’Riordain.
Team:
E Dalton, C O’Brien, K Doherty, P Collins, S Murphy, J Doughan, A Carr, E O’Byrne, B Mulligan (0-2), H Byrne, J Sweeney (0-3), D McVeigh, M O’Dwyer, N O’Riordain (1-1), S McGrath (0-2, f-2). Subs: K Russell for H Byrne, D Mulligan for J Sweeney, G Melican.

At the same time on pitch 2, the under 16’s secured a well earned victory in a friendly against the same opposition. Having played against the advantage in the first half they looked unlikely winners when trailing 1-9 to 1-2 at the interval. A dominant second half performance, during which they confined the visitors to a single point, provided the platform for a 5-10 to 1-10 result. In a game where all the Crokes lads performed well, special mention has to be made of Niall Hanley, Jack O’Brien, Andrew Cullinane and goalkeeper Ken Kelly.
Team (13 a side):
K Kelly, N Hanley, S Boyd, O O’Carroll, N Carr, C O’Neill, A Pilkington, E Doherty, F Motherway, J Cassidy, J Clinton, J O’Brien, A Cullinane.

Earlier the minor B’s hosted Lucan for a league encounter and led 2-2 to 0-2 at half time. Unfortunately they were unable to withstand the onslaught from the wind assisted west county men in the second half and lost out by 3-10 to 4-2. Among Crokes best were Nico Salvino, with four goals, Eoghan O’Dwyer, Gary Melican and Darren Lalor.
Team:
S Garvey, B Halpin, P McCague, B Callinan, P Denieffe, J O’Keeffe, C Casey, E Grogan, E O’Dwyer, J Butler, G Melican, D Lalor, N Salvino, K Hogarty, K Murphy. Subs: T Clarke for J Butler, N Murphy for B Callinan, B McHenry for B Halpin, B English for D Lalor, S Beale for K Murphy, D O’Reilly.

McGrath star man for Eoin
On Saturday Colaiste Eoin, with a strong Crokes contingent, had a fine 1-13 to 1-10 win over Colaiste Eamonn Ris in the Leinster Senior B semi final at Ratheneiska, Co Laois. Congratulations to all concerned.
Report from Sunday Independent:
A superb display by corner-forward Sean McGrath helped Dublin side Colaiste Eoin overcome a six-point deficit against Colaiste Eamon Ris Callan to advance to the Leinster Colleges Senior hurling 'B' final at Ratheneiska.
The Kilkenny side, Callan, scored a goal from Dara Egan and added three points in the opening 10 minutes before McGrath opened his account and went on to add three more and set up Eoin Cronin for another. But Callan finished the stronger with points from Jason Corcoran and Shane Bergin and led 1-6 to 0-5 at the break.
However, McGrath took up where he left off adding two early points and in the 43rd minute another point by the star put Colaiste Eoin ahead for the first time.
Although Callan got back on level terms with an Egan point, it proved to be their last score and McGrath added two more in the closing minutes to complete a great day's hurling.
Scorers -- Colaiste Eoin: S McGrath 1-7, E Cronin, M Shultz 0-2 each, N O'Riordan, J Sweeney 0-1 each. Colaiste Eamon Ris Callan: D Egan 1-1, S Bergin 0-3, J Corcoran, E McGrath 0-2 each, J Power, R Dwyer 0-1 each.
New Senior Hurling Manager
Saturday also saw the seniors commence training under new manager Ger Cushe. Ger, who played with the Naomh Eanna club in Gorey, was a renowned full back for Wexford in the 1990’s and helped his county win the Liam McCarthy Cup in 1996. He was subsequently part of the Wexford management team. We wish Ger and his charges well in the year ahead.

Quote from Parent
“As a parent who has 5 children in the club and 2 more about to start, I have got to know more people since I started helping out with my 5th child that I did bringing all my other children to training and matches. Your child will love to see you getting involved. And remember, these parents are the people you will be standing with on the sideline of pitches for the rest of your son's playing career! Many helpers lighten the load for everybody.”
