Week ending 6 Sept 2009
Body
Sunday’s All-Ireland senior hurling decider between Kilkenny and Tipperary is already being hailed as a classic. The previous day’s 37th running of the Meteor Kilmacud Crokes All-Ireland Hurling Sevens provided some consolation to the losers as Moycarkey Borris took the spoils with victory over Kilruane McDonaghs in the final.
Large crowds, in much more clement weather than 2008, attended the six Sevens venues where 40 teams battled it out in the premier Meteor Cup, 16 in the Shield and 8 in the under 13 competition. The Shield final was also a single county affair as Ballyhaunis overcame neighbours Toureen while the under 13 trophy (run on an 11 a side basis) went to James Stephens after an epic struggle with Kilmacud Crokes.
A host of inter-county players were in action including Tipperary 1991 All-Ireland winner Mark O’Leary (Kilruane McDonaghs), Donal Og Cusack and Paudie O’Sullivan (Cloyne), Aidan Cummins (Ballyhale Shamrocks), Mark Landers and Joe Deane (Killeagh), Shane O'Neill and Pa Cronin (Bishopstown), Ballinhassig’s Martin Coleman and Fintan O'Leary, dual star Keith Higgins (Ballyhaunis and Mayo) and Dublin footballers David Henry (Raheny) and Shane Ryan (Naomh Mearnog) and. Also in attendance were such GAA luminaries as President Christy Cooney, Liam O’Neill, Chairman National Games Development Committee, Paudie Butler National Director of Hurling, Gerry Harrington Chairman Dublin County Board, John Costello Chief Executive Dublin County Board, Con Hogan, former Tipperary County Board Chairman, John Bailey, former Dublin County Board Chairman, former Tipperary greats Len Gaynor and Jack Ryan, former Cork stars John Fenton and Tony O’Sullivan and former Dublin Manager Humphrey Kelleher.
An innovative feature of this year’s Sevens was the GAA National Coaching and Games Development Committee’s pilot of a new Hurling Wall competition called “Falla Ball”. The final was contested by the top five point scorers with Cokes senior Adrian Grogan ahead of the O’Loughlin brothers, Rob and Kevin, at the end. There was also an Under 13 competition won Lochlann McCarthy (Midleton) with Adam Tuck and Jim Gibbons, both from Crokes second and third. The National Games Development Committee hope to develop the initiative into an annual National ALL IRELAND HURLING WALL Competition over the next 3 years, supporting the development of skill levels in the process.
Before the day was done there was one very special event as the club celebrated the contribution of famed son of Kilkenny Martin White with a presentation to mark his centenary. Accompanied by his daughter Mary, son Martin and grandson Rossa, Martin was in fine fettle and confident of another All-Ireland success for the Noresiders. For more click HERE
The Sevens was extensively covered in the media with both Newstalk and RTE Radio 1 broadcasting live from the event throughout the afternoon, RTE Television’s Six One News taking a live feed and RTE Television Sport recording to show as part of its Sunday All-Ireland Hurling Final coverage.
The Sevens festival supported the 'Headsup', text referral service from Rehab Care, which aims to help young adults in difficulty by offering support group information for a range of issues via Freetext on 50424.
As usual the massive organisational and logistical exercise that is the Sevens was pulled off with aplomb by Tom Rock and his team. Our thanks to them and to everyone in the club whose help and support made the day such a success. Our thanks also to Conor Carmody, Philip McGauran, Louise Tier and all at Meteor for their wonderful sponsorship of and empathy with the festival. For full report click HERE
As the Sevens was progressing routine business also had to be looked after as many of the younger teams were in action with the following results:

Sunday morning (6th September 2009) provided a mixed bag of championship round robin results for the minor teams. In the A championship Crokes accounted for Crumlin in Pearse Park by 3-16 to 0-7. In defence Jack Doughan and Paul Collins ruled the roost, Cillian Doherty ran midfield while Hugh Byrne and Sean McGrath in attack battled hard.
Scorers: - Sean McGrath 3.05, Darren McVeigh 0.02, Hugh Byrne 0.02, Barry Mulligan 0.02, Dillon Mulligan, Jude Sweeney, Matthew Kinsella, Enda Grogan, Alan Carr All 0.01
The B team, competing in the “C” championship, had to give way to Ballyboden at Silverpark, going down 2-7 to 0-10. The concession of a goal at the start of each half made the mountain too high to climb notwithstanding the best efforts of Niall Murphy, Sean Boyd, Louis Whelan, Karl Russell, Jonathon Healy-Hayes and midfielder Justin Cassidy. Contemporaneously the intermediates had a useful challenge against Buffers Alley of Wexford.

On Tuesday 1st September the under 15’s opened their championship campaign with a win over St Brigids at Russell Park. A late goal saw Brigids 1-4 to 0-6 ahead at the interval although Crokes had dominated the play. For fifteen minutes the visitors could only nudge ahead. The introduction of Kevin James McGowan turned the game and Crokes ran out 2-12 to 1-5 winners. Among the leading lights were Michael Herlihy, Conor J O’Dwyer, Mark Collins, James Murphy, Conor O’Dywer and Oisin O’Rorke. Crokes next game is a semi final against Cuala likely on Sunday 12th September
