Report for week ending 27 Sept 2009

Body

A heavy weekend programme had two particular highlights. On Friday night, September 25th 2009, in Parnell Park the Kilmacud Crokes senior hurlers secured top spot in Group B of the championship and with it a seeded draw for the quarter finals. The following day the under 14’s produced a league topping performance when defeating Cuala by three points at Thomastown.

Under 14’s v Cuala

For more click here! The under 14’s went into Saturday’s Division 1 showdown at Thomastown trailing Cuala by a point in the league table. A Herculean effort was called for and a Herculean effort was delivered in a hard fought game. Crokes led by 0-7 to 0-4 at the interval. At one stage in the second half the visitors led by six points but the result was in doubt right to the end. Thanks in particular to the contributions of goalkeeper Eamonn Allen, Michael O’Dwyer in the number 2 shirt, a superb half back line of Cian MacGabhann, Donnchadh O’Murchu and Ronan Horgan, Donal Keane up front and substitute Dara Mullin the Kilmacud boys came out on top by 1-11 to 1-8. The result was a fitting and well deserved reward for the boys their families and the management team led by Tom McIntyre and Gearoid MacGabhann. Well done to all. U16sv Ballyboden St Endas

Later in the afternoon the under 16’s performed very creditably against a fancied Ballyboden side at Sancta Maria in the championship semi final before going down 2-14 to 0-11. The final scoreline exaggerates the gap between the sides. With the breeze, at the interval Boden led 0-10 to 0-3. Within ten minutes of the restart four Crokes points to one left four between the teams. A Ballyboden goal in the forty first minute was immediately met with two overs. Notwithstanding the forty sixth minute dismissal of a Crokes player, it was still the same margin (1-12 to 0-10) until the fifty seventh minute when the home team hit a point and goal in quick succession. In the remaining few minutes another Crokes player was shown the line and Boden tapped over a free to leave it 2-14 to 0-11 at the death. Crokes had star performers in Paddy Tighe who kept a sound goal throughout, Robert Murphy who was particularly good second half, Emmet Doherty who held the centre impressively, Shane Moran who drove forward with purpose and Ken Kelly who was accurate from placed balls.

Team: P Tighe, O O’Carroll, R Murphy, S Boyd, C Delaney, E Doherty, S Moran, C O’Neill, O O’Rorke, K Kelly (0-8, f-6), J Huban, J Clinton, A Pilkington (0-2, f-1), J Cassidy (0-1), F Motherway. Subs: C O’Dwyer for C Delaney, M Geraghty for F Motherway (both half time), C Devins for C O’Neill, C Gormley for J Clinton, N Hanley for S Moran, A Cullinane, J O’Brien and N Gorey

Under 13’s

Both under 13 teams were in league action. The A’s hosted Whitehall Colmcilles at Deerpark and succumbed to a last minute goal, 2-13 to 3-9, having been up five or six points for most of the second half. The defensive unit played well as did Tom Duke at midfield. Conor Gowing was the pick of the forwards. Their B compatriots crossed the city to Finglas to take on Erins Isle. There were four points in it at half time, 2-4 to 1-2 for the homesters. Despite the best efforts of Francis O’Reilly, Matthew Redmond, Sayeed Rizvi, Richard Couse, Ruairi Geraghty, Cian O’Connor and Paul Comerford, Isles proved too strong, winning by 3-11 to 1-10.

Junior B’s v St Judes

On Sunday September 27th the Junior B’s continued their championship preparation with an AHL5 away game against St Judes. Crokes led 1-8 to 0-6 at the break but found the stiff breeze and hill militated against them in the second half at the end of which the home team edged it by a point, 0-15 to 1-11. Crokes leading lights included Paddy Igoe, John Ross Hunt, Darragh Burke who was very accurate from frees, Daire Brennan and Aidan Byrne.

Team: D Brennan, P Ryan, P Igoe, D Staunton, C Cunningham, A Byrne, C O’Keeffe, K Russell, J O’Keeffe, B Sheehan, JR Hunt, D Burke, J Healy-Hayes, P Rath, A Crean.  Sub N Hall for D Staunton
