On the pitch Saturday 24th April 2010 provided Dublin league games for the under 16’s (Division 1), under 14A’s (Division 1), under 14B’s (Division 3) and under 13 C’s (Division 5).

 

 

 

The under 16’s went to Bridgefield and overcame St Sylvesters by 3-8 to 1-9; the Crokes transcriber had it 3-9 to 1-7. Played on a good sod but in a small tight pitch this was a game that never truly got going. Save for the very early stages, the result rarely looked in doubt. The winners missed a lot of scores with the wind in the first instalment and yet led 2-4 to 0-4 at its conclusion – all the Malahide’s lads scores coming from frees. The second period was more of the same with the Crokes boys generally on top but making hard work of pulling away. Among the more prominent Kilmacud players were Andrew Colclough, Daibhid Corish, Conor O’Dwyer and Robert Murphy in a strong defence, Kevin James McGowan at centre forward and midfield and Conor J O’Dwyer at top of the left.

The under 14A’s defeated St Vincents at Silverpark on a 6-7 to 0-2 scoreline, with the visitors not scoring after the break. On a day when Crokes were dominant throughout, Lorcan Tucker and Desmond Dagg particularly caught the eye.

 

 

For the under 14B’s it was a trip across town to play Erins Isle. After a close game, where the Finglas lads led 1-4 to 1-3 at the break, the spoils stayed north of the Liffey – 1-11 to 1-8. This was the second time in 24 hours this team was in action. The previous evening they entertained Liam Mellow’s from Castletown, Co. Wexford in Pairc de Burca. Crokes led 1-3 to 1-2- at the short whistle and, thanks to a scoring burst midway through the second half, pulled away to win 6-7 to 1-4.

Back to Saturday. The under 13C’s hopped over to Ringsend Park where they came out the right side of a 4-4 to 2-3 result in Division 5. It was 1-2 to 1-0 in the home side’s favour at the interlude. Mark Phelan, Michael Frawley and Sean McSharry all played well, working against a strong first half breeze, with impressive goalkeeping from Conal Keane. Crokes took advantage of the wind in Part 2 during which new goalie Sean Dunbar pulled off some fine saves.

 

 

 

Some 35 of the under 13C’s A and B counterparts ventured to the real capital for a full on weekend’s hurling.

First into action were the B’s against Carrigtwohill where the Crokes boys came out on top, 3-8 to 2-8 with Brian Grogan, Tom Fox, Conor Kelly and Joey Dalton to the fore.

Shortly afterwards the A’s faced up to Sarsfields in nearby Riverstown where a great game ended 6-7 to 5-5 in the Glanmire boys’ favour. Headline acts for the Kilmacud team included Alex Considine with 3-2, Cathal Keane, Darragh Butler, and Conor O’Dwyer.

 

On Sunday both under 13 teams played Na Piarsaigh on the northside of Cork city.

The A’s went under 3-18 to 3-6 with Cathal Keane, Stephen O’Dwyer, Brian Grogan and Mark O’Rourke shining.

The B’s had better luck, prevailing 3-12 to 2-6, in a game where Tom Fox, Eoin Sheehy, Johnny Maher, Chris Kealy and Martin Connor took the plaudits.

To facilitate the trip, on Monday 19th April 2010, the two Division 1 teams played each other in Division 1 of the league with bragging rights going to KC2, 4-10 to 3-3.

In Dublin on Sunday three teams took the field

 

 

Silverpark played host to the minor A’s league Division 1 game at 11.00am against Ballyboden. After an entertaining hour’s hurling the Firhouse Road side bagged the points. Three goals from Alex Pilkington helped Crokes to a 3-2 to 1-7 halftime lead, playing with the breeze. A forty sixth minute goal put Boden ahead 2-10 to 3-4. From there to the finish they held the advantage despite strong Kilmacud pressure and it concluded 2-13 to 3-6.

 

Among those to lead the losers’ charge were Robert Murphy, Steven Beale, Gary Melican, Dillon Mulligan, Thomas Clarke, Jude Sweeney and Alex Pilkington.

At 5pm at the Leopardstown venue the minor B’s had better luck, with a convincing 4-19 to 0-10 win over Commercials in Division 3. It was 3-9 to 0-7 at the break. On a day when many stars shone among the more eye catching were James Butler, Jamie Clinton, Niall Murphy and Fionan Motherway.

The under 15’s also played Ballyboden on Sunday morning at Sancta Maria in Division1 of the league. The visitors came out the wrong end of a 2-5 to 0-10 result in a tough, physical match, which they might have won, had they taken their opportunities. Gregory Buckley, Dara O’Gallchobhair, Odhran O’Siochru and Ronan Horgan were most prominent for Crokes. Referee J Turner…

It was also a busy schools hurling period for many Crokes players and mentors. On Friday 23rd April 2010 Colaiste Eoin were beaten 3-14 to 1-16 by Colaiste Eanna at O’Toole Park in the final of the Dublin Senior A championship.

Punchestown Banishes Recession Blues

 

 Over 500 hundred people attended the seventh annual Kilmacud Crokes Hurling Corporate Race Day at the Punchestown National Hunt Festival on April 20th 2010. Held in the refashioned and hugely impressive Punchestown Pavilion located just next to the last fence the scene was set from early on set the tone. Seven buses ferried many of the guests from the City Centre and Glenalbyn. The day was expertly and excellently “MCed” by Kilmacud Crokes hurler and Newstalk presenter Oisin Langan Among the tipsters dispensing their insights and wisdom were jockey Andrew Lynch, Haley O’Connor from Ladbrooks, trainers Tom Taaffe and Conor O’Dwyer, former Galway hurling manager, Cyril Farrell and his Sunday Game colleague Michael Lyster. For Kilmacud Crokes Hurling the day was a resounding success. We are particularly grateful for the generous contributions of those who took tables or seats or who in any form supported the Race Day. The proceeds will go towards the development of hurling within the club and will assist in clearing the debt on the €500,000 Hurling Arena at Glenalbyn, providing a full time hurling coaching service and funding Winter training facilities. These are all necessary measures as we aim for best practice and strive to develop hurling among young people and within the community. Especial thanks must go to the energetic Paul Gorman and his organising work group and also to all the helpers on the day and everybody who assisted in any way. We are also particularly appreciative of the help from the staff at Punchestown – headed by Dick O’Sullivan, Liam Houlton & Louise Keane – and Mike O’Donovan and the Dobbins team.

Remember now is the time to put Punchestown 2010 in your diary!
