Report Week Ending 27th June 2010
A busy week of adult league action was less productive than preceding seven day periods, especially for the seniors, but still produced some satisfactory results – particularly a sixth league win in a row for the Junior A’s.
It was the Junior A’s who, on Tuesday evening 22nd June 2010, got the week off to a good start with a 2-24 to 2-5 AHL5 win over Clontarf at Silverpark. In a good all round team performance minors Jonathon Healy-Hayes and Karl Russell deserve special mention as do Conor Sheehan and David Staunton who scored a number of points from half back.
The following evening the seniors recent good run was derailed away to Ballyboden St Endas in AHL1 at Pairc Ui Murchu, 4-18 to 1-13. For forty minutes Crokes contested well and there was little indication of the ultimate scoreline. Unfortunately when Boden upped the intensity the Kilmacud team was not able to stay with them and did not score after the forty third minute. Until the winner’s surge it had been more or less score for score with the first half concluding 1-8 apiece.
Team:
R Sweetnam, B O’Carroll, N Lillis, A Grogan, S O’Rorke, R O’Loughlin, A Cleary (0-1), B O’Rorke (0-1), N Corcoran (0-2), H Gannon (0-1), D McGovern, J Burke (0-2), F Armstrong, K O’Loughlin (1-5, f 1-3, s/line-1), S McGrath. Subs: B Mulligan (0-1) for S McGrath (23 min inj), D Canny for B O’Carroll (39 min, inj), S Gillen for B O’Rorke, D Browne for R O’Loughlin and C Clinton for N Lillis.
After the first instalment against Crumlin in Silverpark on Saturday evening (26th June 2010), at the end of which Crokes found themselves 1-15 to 1-7 in arrears, the hoped for upturn had not arrived. A late scoring burst, that yielded 1-6, had pushed the visitors clear. An improved second half and late two goal flurry were not enough for the homesters who ended on the wrong side of the 2-21 to 3-13 scoreline.

The Junior A’s continued their winning AHL5 run after a pulsating encounter against Scoil Ui Chonaill at Clontarf Road on Friday evening. This made it six league wins on the trot. For report see
The depleted intermediates remain unbeaten in the league having emerged from their Saturday evening AHL3 assignment with a hard earned draw after a good competitive game against Kevins. For report see
The Junior 8’s played AHL8 games on Thursday and Sunday going down to Faughs in Silverpark and winning away to St Peregrines by 3-12 to 1-5.
Early Saturday morning the under 16’s set off for the annual Carlow Under 16 Hurling Blitz. Crokes lost their opening group game to Dicksboro and then defeated holders, Blackrock from Cork, Patrickswell (Limerick) and Galway’s Craughwell. With six points from a possible eight in the bag, Crokes’ hopes of advancement turned to the final group game between Blackrock and Dicksboro. The Rockies duly obliged with a three point win. This set a three way 65 shoot out. Each side was allowed four point attempts. In conditions of high tension, Blackrock prevailed and Crokes were out. Blackrock went on to win the tournament. Back in Dublin the under 13’s participated in the PJ Troy tournament, overcoming Na Fianna and Fingal in round one before succumbing to St Judes by three points and St Vincents by four at the next stage. It was an early start the following morning as the panel hit for the Na Piarsaigh tournament in Cork. Showing no ill effects, from the journey the Crokes boys accounted for Killeagh (Cork) by 3-21 to 2-6 in their first game. In the semi final they went down 3-12 to 2-3 to the hosts having led 2-2 to 0-4 at the break in a game where the wind played a big part. They then faced Dicksboro in the shield final. Down 2-5 to 0-0 at half time maters looked bleak. A superb second half performance saw the Kilmacud team prevail 5-1 to 2-7.
On Sunday morning four of the under 16 Carlow travelling party lined out for the under 15’s in Division 1 against Cuala at Shankill. Crokes had the better of the first half and broke for tea 2-3 to 1-5 ahead, one of the goals a gem from Ryan Conlon. The Kilmacud boys pressed for the opening ten minutes of the second period during which they increased the lead to two points. By minute forty two the Dalkey side was level. Cuala were next to score. Ciaran McIntyre then brought the teams to parity, 2-5 to 1-8. Two Cuala points followed. Crokes pressed. Dara Mullin shot just wide and when Ciaran McIntyre turned Dara O’Gallchobhair’s long range free into the net it looked as if Crokes had pulled the game out of the fire. Unfortunately the referee deemed the corner forward to have been in the square before the ball arrived. Within minutes Crokes had the gap down to the narrowest of margins courtesy of a Mark O’Loughlin free. However, Cuala went up the field to goal and the game finished 2-10 to 2-6 in their favour, thus ending Crokes unbeaten run. For pictures click on the camera above.

Intercounty Action
Following the defeat of the seniors at the hands of Kilkenny the previous Sunday in the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship, Wednesday’s convincing victory by the under 21’s over the same opposition in Nowlan Park (0-17 to 0-12) in the Leinster semi final was just the tonic Dublin hurling needed. Crokes contributed starters Ronan Walsh, Rory O’Carroll and Conor Clinton as well as substitute Barry O’Rorke and panel members Robert and Kevin O’Loughlin to manager Richie Stakelum’s squad. The final against Wexford is fixed for Parnell Park on Wednesday 14th July 2010. For reports see
