Report Week Ending 6th September 2010
Canning magic came to South Dublin on Saturday 4th September 2010. Before a large attendance star studded Portumna from Galway overcame strong competition from 34 of Ireland’s most decorated hurling clubs to claim the 38th annual Meteor Kilmacud Crokes All-Ireland Hurling Sevens Senior Cup. This was the Galway outfit's third title with player of the tournament award, Joe Canning, the stand out act.
In the Shield Monaghan’s Inniskeen Grattans overcame Tyrone’s Eoghan Ruadh by 3-10 to 4-5 to claim their first title. The under 13 trophy was won by O'Loughlin Gaels (Kilkenny) who triumphed over Blackrock from Cork in the final by 1-10 to 1-5. The Balla Ball competitions were won by Ger Flynn from Croom, Co Limerick (senior) and under 16 by Ronan O’Meara (Portumna). Philip McGauran, Sponsorship Manager for Meteor presented the winning teams with their trophies along with Seamus Howlin, Chairman of the Leinster Council. For club teams it was one championship win, one loss for the seniors, a fourth win on the trot for the intermediates and the Division 1 League title for the under 16’s.
On Wednesday the seniors won their delayed championship match against O’Tooles in Silverpark by 2-14 to 1-15. At the same venue on Sunday morning they went down 0-11 to 1-5 to St Vincents and now stand at four points out of a possible eight in the group. Meanwhile down in Glenalbyn the intermediates continued their maximum points championship run by defeating St. Peregrines. Among those to contribute most to the seven point winning margin were Damien Byrne at centrefield, the half back line of Declan Browne, Brian Hanamy and Eoin de Paor, corner back Alan Carr and scorer in chief Daibhi de Paor. On Tuesday 31st August the under 16’s clinched the league title with a 3-17 to 3-8 win over Ballyboden St Enda’s. The visitors got the perfect start with a goal in the opening minute quickly followed by a point. Crokes clawed their way back and hit the front after ten minutes. The game was hard fought throughout and the winners were made work for their victory. For pictures see HERE

The following evening the under 16’s went to Kilkenny to face James Stephens at Larchfield. A close fought game saw the kittens take the spoils by 3-14 to 3-11. The sides were 2-7 at the break.

The busiest of several busy groups were the under 13’s for whom the week opened well on Monday evening 30th August 2010 with good away results for both under 13 Division 1 teams. Having gone three goals behind in the first five minutes, KC1 drew with table toppers Na Fianna 0-13 to 3-4 while KC2 cemented second place when winning 5-9 to 3-10 against third placed Naomh Barrog. The same evening the minor A’s drew a challenge against Castleknock.
KC3 were away to St. Pergrines in Division 5 and won 3-5 to 2-7 on Wednesday. Crokes dominated midfield in the first half and scored three goals, the pick of them from Peter O’Reilly. The visitors’ thirteen players tired in the second half but dug deep to reverse a Peregrine’s fight back. After a spell in goal Louis de Courcy returned to the outfield fray, scored the equaliser and earned a free for Conor Walsh to stroke over the winner. Joey Dalton added some very cool goalkeeping as the evening drew into see Crokes home.
On Saturday a combined A under 13 squad took part in the thirteen aside competition as part of the Meteor Kilmacud Crokes All-Ireland Hurling Sevens festival. With victories over Naomh Eanna, Gorey, and Turloughmore, Galway and a one point loss to Na Piarsaigh, Cork, they qualified to face O’Loughlin Gaels in the semi final where they had to give way to the eventual winners.
In AHL8 on Friday night the Junior E’s went down by four points to St Patricks Palmertown at Glenauline Park, 3-8 to 1-9. Better performers were Paddy Tighe, Sean Boyd and Gavin Hyland.
